VEEDERSBURG — Gene Allen Francis, 80, Veedersburg, died at 3 p.m. Saturday, April 13, 2002 in Veterans Affairs Illiana Health Care Hospital, Danville, Ill. He was born April 4, 1922 in Kokomo, the son of Calvin and Beulah (Berlin) Francis. He married Mary Jane Hoagland Aug. 5, 1943 in South Mills, N.C. She survives. He was a life resident of Veedersburg. He attended Veedersburg schools, leaving before graduation to serve in the Navy during World War II. He was a former pipe fitter. He was member of Charles Forrest Post #288 American Legion, Fountain County Old Guard Post #2395 V.F.W. and Boilermakers and Pipe Fitters Union. Survivors, besides the wife, include: two daughters, Gay L. (Robert) Myers and Gloria (Robert) McElwee, both of Veedersburg; a sister, Bette Reed, Veedersburg; 10 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, a son, two brothers and a sister. He was cremated and gravesite memorial services will be held later (time to be announced) in Osborn Prairie Cemetery north of Veedersburg with military services by the American Legion and V.F.W. Parham Shelby Funeral Home, Veedersburg, is in charge of arrangements. – jlr
